Prayer Calendar - May 2023

Praise items and prayer requests coming from within ANiC, ACNA and the Anglican Communion for each day of this month.

  1. Give thanks for the important GAFCON IV conference held last month in Kilgali, Rwanda. Once again, this gathering of orthodox Anglicans from all around the world has proven to be both a great encouragement and of strategic importance to the proclamation of the transforming Gospel of Jesus. Thank God for the clear, faithful statement of the Kilgali Commitment released after the conference, the text of which can be read here: https://www.gafcon.org/news/gafcon-iv-the-kigali-commitment

Pray also for the ongoing ministry of Gafcon, our global family of authentic Anglicans standing together to retain and restore the Bible to the heart of the Anglican Communion. Pray for the fulfillment of their God-given mandate: “Gafcon works to guard and proclaim the unchanging, transforming Gospel through biblically faithful preaching and teaching which frees our churches to make disciples by clear and certain witness to Jesus Christ in all the world.”

  2. Pray for Bishop Dan Gifford (& Cathryn) in these early months of his tenure as diocesan bishop of ANiC. May God grant him all the health, strength, discernment, vision and the passion he needs for this heavy responsibility. Pray for protection for him from illness and fatigue. Grant him Gospel zeal as he cares for the clergy and parishes in Canada and New England.

  3. Our diocese and province – Pray for the Anglican Network in Canada and all of our parishes across Canada and in New England. Pray for revival in our churches and their neighbourhoods. May great passion for the Gospel be a hallmark of each congregation.

Pray for our primate, Archbishop Foley Beach (& Allison), as he gives godly leadership to the Anglican Church of North America (ACNA). Pray also for him in his strategic role as chairman of the Gafcon primates’ council as the primates seek to follow Jesus and the truth of His Gospel in an increasingly turbulent Anglican Communion.

  4. Pray for Bishop Stephen Leung (& Nona). Pray for health, protection, wisdom and vision and the ongoing ministry of AMMiC. Pray for Bishop Don Harvey (& Trudy) in his roles as ANiC’s episcopal vicar and as senior chaplain to the ACNA College of Bishops. Pray also Bishop Charlie Masters (& Judy), ANiC’s bishop of evangelism; Bishop Trevor Walters (& Dede), bishop of mediation, Bishop Ron Ferris (& Jan), bishop of church planting and retired Bishop Malcolm Harding (& Marylou). Thank God for their fruitful ministries and may God continue to use them in service to the Lord.

  5. As circumstances escalate and tension increases both in Ukraine and in Russia, let us not lose heart, but persevere in prayer by beseeching God for mercy and an end to the destruction and desperate decisions. Pray also for the people of Turkey and Syria amid the unparalleled destruction and loss of lives caused by successive earthquakes in March. May the Christians in both nations reach out to others with compassion and hope in the midst of such devastation.

  6. Pray for our Electoral Nominating Committee (ENC), chaired by Executive Archdeacon Paul Charbonneau, as they seek the Lord’s will concerning candidates for the office of suffragan bishop serving in western Canada to be elected at our diocesan synod later this year.

  7. ANiC’s 5 Ministry Priorities – Pray that God will use these five strategic priorities to transform us and our parishes. Pray for the leadership teams around each priority:  Bold witnesses; Biblically grounded; Loving children & youth into the Kingdom; On mission, and Planting & Growing Churches.
Today is also our annual Sanctity of Life Sunday. Pray for our churches as they affirm and proclaim life as a precious gift from God.

  8. ANiC archdeacons, canons & all clergy – Pray for spiritual and physical protection and renewal as well as God’s blessing upon their ministry. Pray also for their spouses & families that God would grant them safety and health in body, mind and spirit and may the Lord grant them grace upon grace as they pastor those under their care.

  9. ANiC staff & volunteers, especially our new executive director, Rev. Canon Howard Edwards– Pray for strength for the tasks, faithfulness in service, and joy in the Lord. May God’s blessing rest on ANiC as we seek to know, love and serve Him. Pray also for ANiC’s council, chancellor & registrar – Pray for wisdom and servant hearts as they serve ANiC. May they know God’s leading, seek His will, and experience His joy.
Pray also for our Clergy and Spouses Retreat beginning today in Sumas, Washington. Pray for this three day event of rest, fellowship, prayer and teaching that our clergy and their spouses would be greatly refreshed and encouraged.

  10. Asian & Multicultural Ministries in Canada (AMMiC) – May God bless and prosper their ministry as they reach out to ethnic communities and new immigrants with the transforming Gospel of Jesus, and engage in planting new churches. 28. On this Pentecost Sunday, let us ask God for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon His Church worldwide, especially upon the Anglican Church in North America and our diocese, the Anglican Network in Canada.

Collect for the Day of Pentecost: Almighty God, on this day, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation: Pour out this gift anew, that by the preaching of the Gospel your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

  29. The nations of the world are deeply divided internally and increasingly polarized and violent. The Church worldwide needs to reflect on the Scriptural promise below and see the responsibility that we have – “those who are called by My Name” – to seek the Lord, to repent of our wicked ways, asking him to mercifully hear from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our lands.
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV

  30. Pray for the millions of refugees and internally displaced people worldwide. Pray for persecuted Christians, especially in Islamic, communist and war-torn lands. Pray especially for the millions of refugees fleeing from the horror of the war in Ukraine, and for the church and the peoples of Afghanistan and Iran. Pray also for the host nations who have openly received thousands of refugees. May God grant them compassion and logistical wisdom in handling the inevitable issues raised by such a migration.

  31. As we continue through 2023, pray for a fresh outpouring of repentance and revival upon our nations and our world! “Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence - as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil - to make your name known to your adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at your presence!” Isaiah 64:1-2 ESV
